Jacie's Latest....

Winter 2014-2015 Book Obsession: The Berenstain Bears

Jacie cannot get enough of this series!  She reenacts the stories, alternately assigning me the Mama Bear role or the Sister Bear role depending on whom she wants to be.  We've even borrowed the Berenstain Bears cartoon DVDs that our library has repeatedly!  The awesome discovery
I made when ordering every Berenstain Bear book via our interlibrary loan system is the subseries within Berenstain Bears called Living Lights.  These are Christian-themed Berenstain Bear books that each begin with a verse and flesh out some Scriptural truth through the story line.  Terrific bonus to an already greatly loved series!

"Beginners Bible for Kids" has a Youtube cartoon series that Jacie can't get enough of.  She loved the Beginners Bible Storybook that we read over and over to her from the time she turned two years old until we recently advanced to the Jesus Storybook Bible.

The Youtube cartoon series based on the Beginners Bible storybook is just as good, sticking closely to the Biblical account without too much embellishment and providing great visual support to the well-loved Bible stories.  Jacie watches them daily and repeatedly -- it's the only thing she wants to do when she gets on the computer anymore!

Favorite Book of the Month

IIama IIama red pajama

Jacie and I have been delighted with this recent find.  She asks me to read it at least twice a day. Rhyming and amazingly cute illustrations make this book a huge hit for any preschool-aged child. After returning Llama Llama red pajama, we just had to get another in the same series Llama Llama time to share.  Already, Jacie practically has the book memorized.
 A my name is Alice
Very cute book I learned about from Sonlight's (a Christian homeschool curriculum) 4/5 year-old reading list. I don't purchase the curriculum, just look up the books at our local library and work through the list that way...

Jacie absolutely loves the fun alliteration on each page, as the book works through the letters of the alphabet. It's great for reinforcing letter sounds, too! And a much-enjoyed twist on the typical "letters of the alphabet" books.

Strega Nona
When I happened upon this book at our library, it rang a vaguely familiar bell in the deep recesses of my mind.  Still not sure when and where I read it, but the warm fuzzy, albeit cloudy, memory prompted me to check it out on Jacie's behalf.  And she loves it!
Strega Nona has an old Italian folktale appeal while teaching a valuable lesson on the consequences of disobedience when Big Anthony fails to heed Strega Nona's warning not to touch the magic pasta pot.  With a storyline reminiscent of Pandora's box, the humorous but dire fallout of Big Anthony's actions never fail to delight Jacie who strongly calls me to attention if I leave out any part of the story along the way.  And you know a book has made an indelible impression on your child when she references it throughout the day!

What fun, enlightening, or value-laden books are your children enjoying these days?
